Japanese Kokeshi dolls originated in the north-eastern region of Japan during the Edo period. They were originally designed as children’s toys but later became a popular souvenir for travellers visiting the onsen hot springs in the Tohoku region.

The Zaō-takuya style of kokeshi doll was originally produced at the Zaō onsen. They commonly feature designs of cherry blossoms, chrysanthemums, and a tegara hair ornament, reflected through the red lines on the head of the doll.
